Hungry for Wood: An American Memoir from the Shores of Iwo Jima to the Tundra of Alaska
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (January, 2001)
Average review score:

GREATEST GENERATION PERSONIFIEDFrom the depths of the Great Depression of the 1930's through the Battle of Iwo Jima to the settling of Alaska, this book is filled with the sights and sounds of an entire generation. Mr. Rhodes was born into poverty, earned a Purple Heart for wounds on Iwo Jima, and lived the Alaskan dream. Pathos and hilarity, mixed with tragedy and triumph make this book a must reading for fans of "Saving Private Ryan", "The Greatest Generation", et. al.

Hunting: The Way It Was to Our Changing Alaska
Published in Paperback by Publication Consultants (01 December, 1998)
Average review score:

Biased reviewThis book is a great look into fair chase hunting, focusing on the polar bear hunting of days past. These pilots operated under severe conditions and survived many close calls. True sourdoughs, they demonstrated many of the qualities that built this great land. I admit this is a biased review since it was written by my grandmother about my grandfather. This is her 3rd book, all written after age 85. I just had to brag on them a bit but I do recommend this book for anyone who enjoys flying small planes, hunting, or pioneers.

I Am Eskimo: Aknik My Name
Published in Paperback by Alaska Northwest Books (February, 1989)
Average review score:

Wonderful Eskimo stories from Northwest AlaskaThis terrific little book tells a mix of traditional folktales and the author's own experiences as an Inupiat Eskimo of Northwest Alaska. Paul Green lived from the end time of the traditional Eskimo culture ca. 1900 into the 1970s and seems to have been cheerfully comfortable and confident in both. A plus: the book is written in Village English, the curious and charming dialect spoken by older Alaska Natives all over the state, even today. Another plus: sketches by George Ahgupuk, a famous Eskimo pen-and-ink artist.

If I Touched an Eagle

This story took me back to a boyhood time.Ms. Stamm took me back to a boyhood time in my life. When my family, the fields around our home and my school were all that encompassed my life. Her characters realize an awareness of the frugality of our environment as seen through their young eyes.
I truly enjoyed reading this short, but fun filled story.

An excellent book for students at 5th grade level or below! We used this book to supplement our Alaska unit in social studies and science before our Iditarod Sled Dog Race unit. It gave us all great information about the people of Alaska before 1959. The content led to many other science topics and discussions. We highly recommend this book!

In Search of Gold: Alaska Journals of Horace Conger 1898-1899
Published in Paperback by Alaska Geographic Society (July, 1983)
Average review score:

His Dream Was To Go To Paris"In Search of Gold" is a plainly written tale of a Minnesota pharmacist who is lured to the Copper River Valley of Alaska by the promise of gold. His dream is to eventually take his sour-faced wife to Paris and live happily ever after on his findings. But he was lucky to survive Alaska's Copper River Gold Rush of 1898. For one thing, there wasn't any gold. And the hardships of a totally unknown wilderness were almost enough to kill him. In 1898, many writers wrote in a flowery style that's hard to decipher nowadays. But Horace Conger is wonderfully concrete. This book was put together by his descendents, and is a classic in Alaska Gold Rush history.
